Nîmes officials started taking action as early as the 17th century to save the city’s Roman ruins.
As for the Arena, which had been used as a fort, a neighborhood where people lived,
and even a quarry, it started to be considered as a monument at the end of the 18th century − a place that should
be preserved for its beauty and its status as a symbol of the past.
